Stogumber Community Village Shop Ltd.  is a community shop & Post Office working for the community with the community.  Our aim and mission is to provide good service and quality goods at value for money prices. We aim to provide products from both national and where possible from local suppliers thus reducing road miles with a view to caring for the environment.   Supporting the local community and our customers is impotant to us and will always be our mission.  In Stogumber shop we work for you and with you – the community.

Visitors often wonder how we pronounce ‘Stogumber’.

It’s  St’gumber.  The o is almost silent.

Check our High Street shop window for unusual and innovative displays which occasionally include products from within!  The window display team offer an eclectic mix of diverse displays linking to local village events or national holidays.  Whatever they choose, the 6 strong team have great fun dressing the window and like to keep passers by and visitors guessing whether it is a teashop or a shop and what the shop actually sells.

‘The Shop’, until recently known as ‘Central Stores’, sells an extensive range of items from daily newspapers, fresh bread and vegetables, from groceries to fine wines and spirits, deli goods in the chiller, frozen ready meals in the freezer along with toiletries, baking, store cupboard, envelopes, paper, and household items.  A veritable Pandora’s Box in fact.

We have retained that link with ‘Central Stores’ in our name to retain the history of the sho in the village.  The shop has been trading in this spot for well over 100 years.

Who are we?

Stogumber Community Village Shop is a Limited Company registered with the Financial Conduct Authority.  The role of the Financial Conduct Authority is to regulate financial services in the UK and every registered individual, firm or company.

Seen here are just a few of our volunteers: Chris G taking a delivery, Sheila our shop volunteer manager/staff trainer with volunteers Karen and Ken (shopping) during the first week of trading.

The 60-70 strong volunteer group took over ‘Central Stores’ in Stogumber at the end of March 2023 when owners Roger and Anne Howe retired. For the past 16 years Anne and Roger, with occasional help from their son Scott,  ran the shop as a successful business. In more recent times one of two of the villagers have been co-opted to work a day a week part time to give Roger a break enabling him to provide more support to Anne at home. Roger was always cheerfully ‘there’ for the community in so many ways. He sold tickets for and supported local events, advised new residents and holiday visitors on local routes of travel, places of interest and provided essential information on bin days and other services.

Roger was sensitive to everyone’s situation by offering help and advice when it was needed. He noticed when someone hadn’t come in as usual and followed up to check they were OK. He had a great relationship with the children and helped them work out their spend and their change from pocket money purchases. He personally delivered shopping when people were unable to get to the shop and had phoned in an order. He and Anne in the background looked after everyone during the pandemic. The village owes them both a huge vote of thanks for his support over the years.

Following their excellent example, the ‘Stogumber Shop’ volunteers aim to get to know every one of their customers and to offer that same support, along with a happy smile.  We are working for you and with you – the local residents and the wider community and visitors too.  We try hard to meet good standards and to supply quality goods that you need at the best value possible.  If there is something you’d like but cannot find in the shop, please ask and we will do our best to get it for you.

In the summer months the bench outside is a great place to sit and chat to friends and customers alike.

The shop is overseen by a steering committee led by Lance Moir.

Regular operational committee members: Lance Moir, Jerry Pattison, Sheila Gibbs, Julian Spicer, Paula Clements, Russ Sandy.

Other members who join the team for specific meetings and functions: Lucy Bateman, Mary Scott, Nicholas Browne.

Webmasters & Social Media (comes under the banner of Marketing and Publicity):

  • L. Bateman,   J. Tillyer,   P.  Clements,   B. Walker.
  • Contact via Stogumber Shop Facebook profile messages or ask in the shop.

We are keen to co-opt another volunteer to join the marketing and publicity team – mainly to assist with social media – FB Insta etc.   No meetings just the odd email – work from home and occasonally pop into the shop for product photos and updates.
